This course is designed to introduce students to the psycho-sociological analysis of sex and gender in American culture. As part of this course, students will learn about the various conceptualizations of sex and gender and the theoretical and methodological issues relevant to gender studies. Students will develop an understanding of the experiences and interpersonal dynamics within and between different genders and gender identities, how these factors have changed over time and across cultures, and how they are embedded in social institutions such as family, cultural, legal, economic, medical, and educational systems. This course will provide a broad interdisciplinary examination of current issues involving gender such as reproductive rights, body image, power differentials, social roles, class, and the origins of patriarchy.
